The Academic Program

The Department of Languages & Literatures of Europe & the Americas (LLEA) offers first-year and second-year language courses in French, Italian, German, Russian, Spanish, and Portuguese; any of which may be used to fulfill the two-year Hawaiian/Second Language requirement (H/SL), an MA in Spanish, a BA (BA in Languages & Literatures of Europe & the Americas), with three tracks: French Studies, German Studies and Spanish & Latin American Studies, an undergraduate certificate in Russian, and minors in French, German Studies, Latin American & Iberian Studies (taught in English), and Spanish.

LLEA undergraduate and graduate courses focus on language, culture, history, linguistics, film, literature, cultural studies, L2 methodology and translation in French, German, Russian, Spanish, as well as in English (LLEA and LAIS courses).

LLEA prides itself in offering students excellent teaching at every level of instruction and over the previous four decades has received over forty Excellence in Teaching Awards from UH Mānoa and from a variety of local and national organizations. LLEA has as its central mission to expand the humanities by advancing knowledge of the world, engaging in research and creative activities, encouraging critical thinking in our students, and preparing them for the job market. Our work looks to Europe, Latin America, the U.S., Asia, Oceania, and Africa, always cognizant that the Pacific, and more specifically Hawaiʻi, is our home.

The department promotes language proficiency and cultural awareness through its sponsorship of student organizations, films, lectures, scholarships, and study abroad programs. Currently, the department supports programs in France (Angers, Annecy, Paris); Florence, Italy; Berlin, Germany; Vladivostok, Russia; and several sites in the Spanish-speaking world.
